Complete the Date on Checks and Contracts

Monday, February 24th, 2020 -- 10:39 AM

(WRN) -Before you hand off that check or sign your contract this year, make sure you're fully completing the date.

As you're signing checks and contract this year, be sure you're filling out the complete date, rather than just ending it with 20. State consumer protection administrator Lara Sutherlin says forgetting to add the ending digits to 2020 could let someone who's less than honest swindle you.

"Someone at the company could change the date on your contract to 2019, and unscrupulously claim that it's owed another additional year of payment for you."

Sutherlin says just leaving a 20 in the date area could lead to someone changing the year you supposedly signed.

"The ability to change the date on a contract or change the date on a check could actually have a financial impact on you."

Sutherlin says leaving just a 20 on that document gives other people a chance to alter it.

"You just want to make the numbers on your check or your contract clear so they can't be manipulated later and people can't then steal money from you by backdating or front dating your check."

Sutherlin says this is more about prevention than assuming that companies are actively out to scam you.
