Clark County Board Addresses Open Intoxicants Rules on County Road Trails

Saturday, February 22nd, 2020 -- 8:15 AM

The Clark County Board of Supervisors approved the reading of some ordinances at their meeting on Thursday.

One ordinance involved amendments to some of the county board rules and regulations. The other ordinance that was approved involved amendments to the county ordinance regarding streets, roads, sidewalks and other public places. More specifically, the ordinance addresses open intoxicants by ATV/UTV riders. In December of 2018, the county passed a new rule that opened all county trunk highways to ATV/UTV riders. However, the ordinance did not address riders having open intoxicants while riding on the county highways. The amendment to the ordinance that was approved by the board addresses that including the potential fines and penalties.

One board stated that she believed more enforcement was needed regarding riders on highways, claiming they don’t pay attention and ride dangerously. It was stated that the Sheriff’s Department or Police Departments can pull riders over if they’re breaking the law while on county highways. However, the county’s DNR warden patrols the trail system. Also, to begin the meeting, members of the Clark County Sheriff’s Department were presented with Life Saving Awards.
