Sexual Assault Test Kit Bill Falls Prey to Partisan Politics

Friday, February 21st, 2020 -- 8:44 AM

(WRN) -Legislation aimed at preventing a backlog of sexual assault test kit results has run afoul of politics.

Last year, the Wisconsin Senate approved a bill that would put guidelines in place for the collection, testing and storage of the kits. It had the support of Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul. But Assembly Republicans, claiming they were improving the bill, added language dealing with immigration and school choice.

Democrats said those were "poison pills" that had nothing to do with the issue. The Senate's Republican Majority Leader, Scott Fitzgerald, said he didn't have support to take up the bill as amended by the Senate. Kaul slammed Assembly Republicans for failing to concur on the Senate bill.
