Municipal Leaders Stress the Importance of Census Workers

Tuesday, February 18th, 2020 -- 11:55 AM

(WRN) -As the start of the 2020 Census approaches, municipal leaders are calling for more people to sign up to help handle the count.

As the start of the 2020 Census approaches, municipal leaders are calling for more people to sign up to help handle the count. Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway says getting a proper population count is vital for every community in the state.

"If Madison's population is undercounted by just 10 percent, we could lose 500 million dollars in much needed services over the next decade."

The start of the 2020 census is nearing, and state and local leaders are calling for everyone to get involved and get counted. Madison Representative Sheila Stubbs says ensuring a proper count is vital to the operations of our state and the country.

"It is extremely important that the 2020 census captures a complete count of our state's population."

Stubbs says door-to-door counts are vital, especially in communities where many people don't fill out the mail in form.

"Marginalized communities have long fought for representation, and the census provides an avenue towards equity, which is especially vital in the state where we know we have the worst racial disparities in our nation."

Census officials are still looking for thousands of applicants to fill census taker positions in Wisconsin to help follow up with the estimated 20 percent of people who are expected to not fill out a mail form or complete the census online.
