(WRN) -Texas-based Enbridge is starting the permitting process to route its pipeline in northern Wisconsin around tribal land.Line 5 carries up to 23 million gallons of oil and natural gas each day from Superior to a plant in Sarnia, Ontario. The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa filed a lawsuit to have the company shut down and remove the pipeline from its land.
Line 5 has been in operation for more than 50 years and it has experienced almost 30 spills releasing more than one million gallons of oil and natural gas liquids. Enbridge plans meetings about its pipeline in Ashland, Mellen and Hurley this month.
