New Legislation Could Stop Robocalls

Monday, February 10th, 2020 -- 7:37 AM

(WRN) -The days of countless robocalls to your house could soon be numbered, thanks to new federal legislation.

The days of countless robocalls to your house could soon be numbered, thanks to new federal legislation. State consumer protection director Michelle Reinen says the new laws allow phone companies the ability to spot scam calls as they happen.

"We do see these scam artists coming all over the world, trying to get these mass amounts of scam calls to go through with these recorded messages that intimidate consumers."

Reinen says that scammers often spoof and fake where they're calling from in order to trick phone companies from taking their calls. New laws will allow them to stop that.

"If they can't match and authenticate the calls, live numbers, legitimate business that control that number, they won't have to put that call through."

Reinen says the new rules allow companies to sniff out phony calls coming through their systems and shut them down before they ever reach a phone.

"So we are really hopeful that when everything is implemented and rolled out completely, those calls will significantly decrease."

She's hoping that the new technology and rules will severely decrease the amount of fear people have when they hear their cell phone ring.
