Wisconsin DMV is Ready to Help You Get a Photo ID to Vote

Tuesday, February 4th, 2020 -- 12:34 PM

(WRN) -You need to have a valid photo ID to vote in the upcoming election, and if you need one, the state is here to help.

You need to have a valid photo ID to vote in the upcoming election, and if you need one, the state is here to help. Patrick Fernan with the D M V says that process can be entirely free.

"If somebody wants to get an ID and they want to use it for voting purposes, they check a box on the form and it is available for free to them."

Fernan says you'll have to bring in a number of documents to start the process.

"Proof of name and date of birth, which is often a birth certificate. Proof of Wisconsin residency, which is often a utility bill, a lease, or a paycheck with your address on it."

Fernan says most people already have a driver's license.

"The driver's license is valid for voting purposes. Nobody needs to get a driver's license AND an ID card. It's just one or the other."

If you already have a driver's license, you're already covered. A number of other IDs like military IDs are also valid. Find out more online at Wisconsin D M V dot Gov.
