NEW BOOK LISTS HAUNTED WISCONSIN, AREA SITES

Tuesday, May 17th, 2005 -- 12:00 PM

Tuesday morning on Viewpoint, we talked to Chad Lewis, the co-author of The Wisconsin Road Guide To Haunted Locations.

The book contains about 100 spots in the state ? some in our area - that are said to be ?haunted?. Lewis and co-author Terry Fisk have researched about 400 locations around the state.

"We want people to be able to actually get there," Lewis says. "We wanted these to be "current hauntings" so if people get there, they can actually experience it."

While doing their research, Lewis said they experienced some curious events.

"We were at a graveyard in Eau Claire and we heard knocking coming from the gravestones," Lewis remembered, "We tried to find anything that caused the knocking - there wasn't."

"We stepped back and took a photograph. The photograph has a large ball of light flying through it," Lewis said.

One of the first locations featured in the book is the Charlotte Mills Bridge just west of Highway 73 on county highway ?H? outside of Christie. As the tale goes, nearly one hundred years ago, Charlotte Mills took her life at the banks of the Black River.

"Many visitors and local farmers reported seeing strange things on the bridge," Lewis explained. "From balls of light hovering around in the woods to actual mist, to the refusal of their horses to cross this bridge at night."

"It got so bad at one point that folks refused to cross the bridge at night. They were pretty scared."

The Wisconsin Road Guide to Haunted Locations is available at bookstores throughout Wisconsin. We also have it for sale here at the Wisconsin Pavilion Cheese Shop.
