Dueling Plans Emerge on How to Spend a Potential Tax Surplus

Friday, January 24th, 2020 -- 7:47 AM

(WRN) -The legislative fiscal bureau is predicting some large tax surpluses this year, and lawmakers in the capital are already rolling out dueling plans to handle it.

The legislative fiscal bureau is predicting some large tax surpluses this year, and lawmakers in the capital are already rolling out dueling plans to handle it. Republicans including Assembly Speaker Robin Vos are already calling for tax cuts. Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz says the legislature should put some thought into it.

"Gets a little dangerous when you start making spending or tax cut decisions in a vacuum without an eye for the future. That's when government has some regrets."

Hintz says he's happy to hear that, because it means more money for the state's rainy day fund.

"You know, that is good that it will add to the cushion that, should we have a downturn any time in the future, there will be more resources there."

Hintz says he'd like to see funds put towards planned fixes for the state's youth prison system.

"Let's get it done. We've got time to do it, there's an opportunity there, we have the resources. And this is good news for the state."

Republicans and Democrats are already dueling with ideas on how to spend that money. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos wants to go with property tax cuts, Hintz would like to see funding for issues that were cut from this year's budget.
