State Department of Justice Partnering with Wisconsin's Gas Stations to Help Spot Human Traffickers

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2020 -- 2:34 PM

(WRN) -The State Justice Department is partnering with Wisconsin's gas stations to help spot human traffickers.

The State Justice Department is partnering with the state's gas stations to help spot human traffickers. Attorney General Josh Kaul says employees working in places like gas stations and hotels can often be the first to spot trafficking.

"They can also allow law enforcement to make contact with a survivor of human trafficking and help that person get the services that are needed to help that person escape from trafficking."

Kaul says the goal of the D O J is to get the traffickers off the streets to stop them from harming people.

"There are a number of different things that they can seize on, whether it's somebody someone dealing with a substance abuse disorder, someone who has a mental health issue, and traffickers often target children."

Kaul says employees at gas stations and hotels, and truck drivers can often be the first people to properly spot traffickers.

"Those are the people we need to be targeting, those are the people who are committing a really horrible crime."

The move comes on the heels of new training for truck drivers to spot trafficking as part of their training at the state's technical colleges.
