State Democrats Oppose Assembly's Protect Life Day Resolution

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2020 -- 11:41 AM

(WRN) -The State Assembly has passed a resolution that names today Protect Life Day.

It's the 47th anniversary of the Roe v Wade case that legalized abortions. Democrat Representative Lisa Subeck says it's yet another push by Republicans to encroach on extremely private medical decisions that women must make.

"In consultation with their physicians, with their family, with their spiritual advisers, with whomever it is that they so choose, but without interference from politicians."

Subeck stated her frank beliefs at the start of discussion.

"You want my full opinion, this is garbage and it should be withdrawn. And I don't say that about many bills and I don't say that about many resolutions. This resolution is about nothing but pure politics."

Subeck says that an abortion is a private decision between a woman and her doctor.

"Mr. Speaker, I have yet to get a phone call from a constituent and I doubt that anyone else in this room has either, saying 'Hey, I need help making a medical decision.'"

The resolution passed on a party line vote. A similar measure did not make it to the floor of the Senate. The resolution calls legalized abortion "a human rights abuse unprecedented in American history". The author, Republican Representative Janel Brandtjen, says she is trying to spark discussion on how important children are.
