Democrats on the State Joint Finance Committee Say Republicans Act as their Own Worst Enemy on Funding Roadblocks

Friday, January 17th, 2020 -- 10:53 AM

(WRN) -Democrats on the legislative Joint Finance Committee say Republicans are acting as their own worst enemy on funding roadblocks.

Democrat lawmakers on the state's joint finance committee continue to be frustrated over what they see as a lack of action on bringing up funding measures. Representative Evan Goyke says the problem isn't what's on the agenda.

"Because the headline going into the joint finance committee today is all about what's NOT on today's agenda. 'What is this committee NOT approving today?'"

Goyke says one jarring example for him is a lack of action on homelessness program funding.

"Republicans created the task force, then introduced the bills, and now in this committee won't appropriate the funds."

Goyke says Republicans are holding up their own funding on their own plans.

"The oversight of this committee is what's holding up progress on reforming our juvenile justice system, because this committee cannot cobble together enough votes. And I should say the Republicans on this committee cannot cobble together a majority vote to move this forward."

Committee co-chair John Nygren says the J F C is providing critical oversight over the funding that the state is handing out.
