Tax Season is on the Way

Monday, January 13th, 2020 -- 7:35 AM

(WRN) -Employers are about to start sending out W-2 forms, and that means Tax Season is on its way.

Tax season is about to start and the IRS is reaching out to people to make sure they're using the Free File program. IRS Free File Director Diane Fox says on average, you probably qualify to file your taxes online for free.

"Anyone who made 69-thousand dollars or less last year, and that's most of us, can use free file."

Fox says most people qualify to file their taxes for free, but don't take advantage of the services.

"I think about 52-thousand from Wisconsin. So that's a lot, but many eligible people missed out on this free way to do taxes."

Fox says it's not only cheaper to use Free File, it's also quicker and safer.

"You're protected using that program, and you can get your refund faster because it gives you an opportunity to electronically file and submit to the IRS, getting it faster than if you did it through paper."

Around 52-thousand Wisconsinites used Free File last year. You can find a list of partnered programs and their free filing software online at I R S dot Gov slash Free File.
