Marshfield School Board Approves Changes to Next Year's School Calendar

Thursday, January 9th, 2020 -- 10:34 AM

(WDLB) -Students in the Marshfield School District next year will get out for the summer one day later than originally planned.

The Board of Education last night made a slight revision to the 2020-21 calendar, which Board member Dorothy Chaney said now reflects the last day of school as June 3rd instead of June 2nd.

"It's important to note that Spring Break week has not changed, so that date is set. In fact, there is going to be an additional half-day on the Friday before Spring Break. So, those of us who travel might not have to miss a half day prior to Spring Break--for the students, but the teachers will be working. And the first day of school, again, is going to be September 1st, so it has not changed."

Spring Break will fall during the week of March 29th of next year, and graduation for the next academic year will be Saturday, May 29, 2021 starting at 11 a.m. Also last night, Chaney said her Policy & Legislation Committee will likely have a discussion soon regarding the district's dress code.

"What are the problems? Is there a gender bias with any dress-code violations? Is the dress code being enforced in schools consistently?"

Board member Dale Yakaites said the dress code issue is one the district should approach with caution.

"The dress-code issues have been issues throughout many school districts, and there has been a lot of legal issues that have taken place in various school districts--not only statewide, but nationally--regarding dress codes. So, I'm sure that there will be some additional research done into some of those types of things if we look at changing our dress code, because that can really be a hot-button issue."

Chaney gave no timeline as to when the Policy & Legislation Committee might take up the dress-code issue.
