State Officials Turning to Non-Traditional Sources to Find New Workers

Thursday, January 9th, 2020 -- 9:08 AM

(WRN) -As the state continues to struggle to find workers to fill jobs, officials are increasingly turning to non-traditional sources to find new workers.

Wisconsin and the rest of the country continue to see record low unemployment, and that means businesses need to work harder to find workers. Department of Workforce Development Secretary Caleb Frostman says that in times of full employment, the state is working to help people get better and more fruitful work.

"Filling jobs is of the utmost importance, and it's a top priority for us, but so is the quality of those jobs. Making sure that the people in Wisconsin can save for retirement, can pay for housing, can pay for groceries."

Frostman says the department has been deepening its work with the department of corrections in improving work training for people who are in jail.

"Helping them to transition successfully back into society? It's a really strong return on investment for those individuals, for their families, of course."

Frostman says the department is stepping up its efforts to recruit and retain veterans after their time in the armed forces.

"The things that make our veterans so effective in their jobs in the service are what our employers are looking for."

Frostman says being able to break the cycle of crime by putting someone to work is a win-win for the state.
