CLARK CO ATV TRAILS TO OPEN SUNDAY

Saturday, April 30th, 2005 -- 6:52 AM

After a long, hard winter, Clark County?s ATV trail system is set to open tomorrow. Clark County has roughly 135 miles of ATV trails and 16 miles of off-road motorcycle trails. Trails coordinator Tim Puskarich says the sport?s popularity continues to grow.

"Every year, we have more and more ATVs coming in to the tri-county area - including Jackson, Eau Claire (and Clark) counties." Puskarich says. "Currently, there are about 215,000 ATVs registered in the state of Wisconsin, last year at this time there were about 195,000."

ATV registrations have been jumping by seven to ten-percent per year. The extra traffic is good for the local economy, but not always good for the trails. Puskarich says they've taken a proactive approach to prevent serious wear on the trails?

"It definitely shows the wear," Puskarich says, adding he's been constantly applying for grant money to rehabilitate trail segments.

"The impact of the machines is definitely there, but we're keeping up at this point and the trails are in really good shape."
