HAIR FOUND IN WOOD COUNTY LAKE; FOUL PLAY?

Friday, April 29th, 2005 -- 8:58 AM

Investigators are trying to determine if a clump of human hair found in a Wood County Lake is the result of foul play or something more benign. The 5-inch in diameter clump of hair was snagged by some fisherman on Lake Dexter, south of Pittsville, Sunday morning. The state crime lab confirmed it was human hair later in the week.

Divers conducted a five-hour search of the area on Wednesday, but didn't find a body.

Lt. Bob Levendoske of the Wood County Sheriff's Department says nothing has been ruled in our out and the investigation continues.

"One of the possibilities is it could be connected to a body, or body part, in the lake," Lt. Levendoske says, adding it could also be a coincidence.

Detectives haven't determined how long the hair had been underwater.

In an interesting twist, Lake Dexter is only about 10-miles southeast of Lake Sherwood. In 1991, fisherman snagged a body there. Levendoske was there when the body of Stephanie Vandenberg of Pittsville was pulled from the water; her murder is still unsolved . He says he's hesitant to draw any parallels between the two cases yet, but this week's events brought back some memories.

The Sheriff's Department currently doesn't have any missing person reports that could explain a body in the water.
