Medford Man Appears in Marathon County Court After Falling for Sting Operation Targeting Child Sex Predators

-A Medford man arrested after falling for a sting operation targeting child sex predators appeared in Marathon County Court on Thursday.Back in September of 2018, an officer was posing as a 15-year-old girl on Facebook when he began communicating with Michael Mayotte. Mayotte said he was willing to travel to the girl’s home and outlined the explicit sexual acts he wanted to do with her. Mayotte was arrested after he arrived in Wausau and purchased condoms at a gas station. Police arrested him as he was walking to the address where he was planning to meet the girl.
Mayotte is being charged with using a computer to facilitate a child sex crime and bail jumping. He has a $50,000 cash bond set against him. During a competency hearing on Thursday, it was determined Mayotte is competent to stand trial, so his court proceedings will continue.
