Neillsville Man May Face Lesser Charges After BASE Jumping Off Communications Tower

Friday, December 13th, 2019 -- 10:44 AM

-A Neillsville man may not be in as much trouble as initially thought after BASE jumping from a communications tower in Menominee back in October.

Mason Barth of Neillsville became entangled on a guy wire of a cellphone tower after he jumped from the tower illegally. Barth had to call the police in order to be rescued from the wire. After his rescue, he was treated at Mayo Clinic Health System and then promptly arrested for criminal trespass. BASE jumping stands for building, antenna, span and earth, the four common objects from which BASE jumpers launch their descent.

Barth was initially charged with criminal trespass to energy provider property. During his court appearance on Thursday, both the defense and stated agreed to dismissing the original charge, which is a felony, and providing new misdemeanor charges. The state has a week to file an amended complaint.
