(WRN) -Senator Tammy Baldwin wants to make it easier for volunteer first responders to find a place to live.Senator Tammy Baldwin is backing a bipartisan plan to make it easier for volunteer firefighters and paramedics to live in their communities. Baldwin says that's important in a time when it's hard to train and retain first responders.
"In Wisconsin over 90 percent of our fire departments are staffed mostly or completely by volunteers."
Baldwin says retaining volunteers is vital since 90 percent of the state's fire departments include volunteers.
"Many young families can't afford to live in the communities in which they want to volunteer."
Baldwin says the Volunteer First Responder Housing Act will help place young families in communities.
"It would basically make two programs that already exist open to volunteer first responders."
The bills will allow volunteers to access federal rural development housing to get both low interest loans to renovate and repair houses, as well as access to half price homes in revitalization areas.
