MAPLE SYRUP PRODUCERS HAVE TOUGH YEAR

Tuesday, April 19th, 2005 -- 2:23 PM

It's been a disappointing year for maple syrup in Wisconsin. The harvest season ends this month. The Wisconsin Maple Syrup Producers Association says the weather hasn't cooperated.

Association executive director Gretchen Grape says it was a very short season. Freezing nights and warm sunny days are needed for a successful season.

Grape says the majority of producers she's spoken with around the state only got a third of their usual crop. Some got about a half.

The small harvest won't necessarily hurt producers financially, since most of them tap maple syrup as a hobby. About a dozen association members depend on it for their livelihood.
