Neillsville Farm Featured on PBS Show

Thursday, November 21st, 2019 -- 1:54 PM

-A Neillsville farm was recently featured on an episode of Around the Farm Table with Inga on PBS.

“Just outside of Neillsville, Hallie and Joe are raising a family and a herd of Murry Gray cattle on the rolling hills of their farm.”

Host Inga Witscher spoke with Hallie Schultz of Marth Homestead on County Highway G west of Neillsville and she offered some history on the Murray Grey cattle they raise.

“Murray Greys came from Australia in the early 1900s. It was a cross between Angus and a Blue Roam Short Horned. They kept having similar types of calves that came out of it, so that family kept breeding for that same look. And here we are however many years later and the Murray Grey is a recognized breed. It’s a breed that does really well at pasture and they are coming out of winter well.”

She also explained why they pasture feed their cattle.

“We really wanted to do grazing because it’s the lifestyle we want to live. We want to be outside in the pastures, we’re not interested in being in the barn all day. And so, that’s the type of job we want to have and so we kept trying to work our way towards doing those daily tasks.”
