Wisconsin DNR Reminds Hunters to Be Safe this Hunting Season

Wednesday, November 20th, 2019 -- 8:45 AM

(WRN) -Before you get out in your deer stand or shack this weekend for the deer season, be sure to be safe.

Deer hunting in Wisconsin has gotten safer and safer, but you still need to be aware of your own safety when you head out this weekend. It's been a number of years since the last fatal shooting accident during deer season, and DNR big game ecologist Kevin Wallenfang says part of that is a change in how people actually hunt.

"Fewer people drive deer like the used to, and a lot of those hunting accidents would happen during deer drives."

Wallenfang says the best way to prevent falls is with a proper harness.

"There are a lot of great devices out there now that you can actually strap yourself in while you're on the ground, and if you have a fall, it will catch you before you make it back to the ground."

Wallenfang says you should never ever try to carry a loaded rifle into your deer stand.

"Use a rope, some type of device that after you get into your stand, you can pull your unloaded weapon up to you."

Also be sure to check the safety equipment and ladder on your stand, and to always wear a harness when you're in your tree.
