Marshfield Man Charged with Child Abuse and Killing a Dog

Tuesday, November 19th, 2019 -- 11:39 AM

(Marshfield News Herald) -A 44-year-old Marshfield man charged with abusing a child and killing a dog made his initial court appearance Monday.

Kevin M. Strey became angry with a 2-year-old boy's behavior and hit him across the face, the boy's mother told police, and the slap left red marks on the boy's face, according to court documents. The boy's mother saw Strey slap the boy on a separate occasion, leaving a hand print on the toddler's face, according to documents. The slaps happened in late September, according to documents. On Sept. 1, Strey woke up the woman and said they needed to take their dachshund to a veterinarian because the dog, Dobby, had fallen off a bed and was injured, according to court documents. The veterinarian was going to sedate the dog to do X-rays, but the dog died. The veterinarian told officers that the Dobby's injuries were too extensive to be caused by a fall from a bed, according to court documents.

The woman told police that, in February, she heard Seth yelling at the toddler and loud thumps. When she went into a bedroom where Seth and the boy were, the boy was lying on a bed, staring at the ceiling. He wouldn't tell his mother what happened, according to court documents. The woman said she found bruises on the back of the boy's thigh when she later changed his diaper, according to court documents. Strey, who is charged with two counts of child abuse, one count of mistreating an animal causing death and one count of disorderly conduct as a domestic abuse incident, faces a maximum of 15 years and nine months in prison, if convicted. Strey currently is free on a $10,000 signature bond.
