Owen-Withee School Board Discusses FEMA Grant Opportunity

Thursday, November 14th, 2019 -- 9:39 AM

-The Owen-Withee School Board discussed the FEMA Grant opportunity at their meeting on Monday.

Jordan Buss presented to the board the idea of leveraging FEMA grant money to do a building project in the District. Jordan is a board member in the Spencer District and helped them write a successful FEMA grant application a year ago. The idea is that FEMA will grant up to 90% of the eligible costs of a building that can serve as an emergency shelter in our community. When not used as an emergency shelter, the building can serve any purpose the district wants. Mr. Buss talked about the Spencer project which is a monolithic dome that serves as a gymnasium and fitness center.

After running the numbers through a FEMA calculator, it appears that the district could get $1.5 million of eligible costs covered by a FEMA grant. The board approved the continuation of applying for a grant by submitting a proposal to the Wisconsin Emergency Management Administration by November 22nd. The idea is that the board will move forward with the process and see if we have a chance at the grant before committing to any kind of building project.
