Senator Baldwin Looking to Prevent Current Administration from Raiding Budget for Border Wall

Monday, November 11th, 2019 -- 12:10 PM

(WRN) -Senator Tammy Baldwin says Democrats on the Senate Appropriations Committee want to prevent the current Administration from raiding the budget to pay for the president's southern border wall.

The President recently spent funds from military construction projects to build sections of his wall. Baldwin says that's not how things are supposed to work.

"Congress appropriates, and the President then applies those funds to the programs for which they were intended."

Baldwin says using emergency powers for a non-emergency just to pay for the President's wall shows a blatant disregard for the constitutional separation of powers.

"We do want to see the president try to seize additional funds in that way, without congressional authorization, or got to other sources that he hasn't previously looked at."

The President used Emergency Powers to take funding from military construction projects this year, and he could be looking into other sources next year.

"He's taking it out of education and health, and those are not the areas that should be raided for something like the construction of a wall."

The President previously diverted billions of dollars away from construction projects for military bases like new schools and housing.
