Wisconsin Joint Finance Committee Approves First Settlement Under Lame Duck Laws

Friday, November 1st, 2019 -- 9:40 AM

(WRN) -The Legislature's Joint Finance Committee has approved a settlement from attorney general's office.

That vote was able to be cast because the two parties in the case, a convenience store chain and the attorney general's office, both waived confidentiality. It's one of the few cases that have been brought before Joint Finance which refuses to sign non disclosure agreements to hear cases. Democratic Representative Evan Goyke says that's not how things should work.

"The lengths to which two parties had to go to bring this settlement through is an example of how broken this new process was. This case is an outlier because both parties have agreed to waive and to come forward and put everything out in the open."

The J F C has approval authority over state settlements under the lame duck laws. Attorney General Josh Kaul has repeatedly requested the J F C sign non disclosure agreements before he will bring cases before the committee.
