(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin farmers who plan to grow industrial hemp next year can now register for a growers license.Under the state's research pilot program, anyone who grows the crop must obtain a license from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture and register their intent to produce it in advance. State law requires that both growers and processors pass a background check with no state or federal drug convictions. Growers pay a one-time licensing fee of $150 to $1,000, depending on how many acres they intend to plant. Processors also need a one-time license, but their permits are free.
Industrial hemp can contain no more than 0.3 percent THC, the psychoactive ingredient present in marijuana. The deadline to apply for a license to grow industrial hemp is March 1. For more information or to register, go to: www.datcp.wi.gov.
