Fitzgerald Sees Impeachment Talk A Plus for State Republicans

Sunday, October 27th, 2019 -- 8:44 AM

(AP) -A Republican legislative leader says attempting to impeach the President will only bolster his support among GOP voters and ensure he will win Wisconsin.

State Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said Thursday at a WisPolitics.com event that he thinks support for the President in the state is stronger than in 2016. The President won Wisconsin by less than a point and both sides see the state as key to his re-election hopes. Fitzgerald is running for Congress next year and says he thinks the Democratic effort to impeach the President will backfire.
He says voters for the President are “fired up” because of impeachment and his support is stronger in suburban Milwaukee counties than in 2016. Democrats argue that their voters are so motivated to defeat the President he will be denied re-election.
