YOUTH DEER LICENSE PROPOSED

Monday, March 28th, 2005 -- 11:01 AM

The state?s largest conservation organization is proposing the legislature create a youth deer hunting license in the 2005-2007 state budget.

Former DNR Secretary George Meyer serves as Executive Director of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation. While the group is vocal in their support for a proposed $12 increase to the cost of a hunting license, he says they have heard from some who fear raising the fee from $20 to $32 will be especially difficult for families with kids to handle.

"For larger families, that may be too much money - especially for young men and women," Meyer says of proposed increase.

Under their proposal, hunters between the ages of 12 and 18 would only have to pay $20 for their license, even if the next budget includes the $12 increase.

Meyer says they have support for the plan in the legislature.

"I think it has an excellent shot of becoming law," Meyer says, adding Rep. Scott Gunderson, who chairs the assembly Natural Resources Committee, has told him he thinks it's a good idea.

"Virtually everybody I've talked to about it says 'yes, we need to do something different for young men and women'."

Currently, those twelve years of age can hunt in Wisconsin as long as they've passed a hunter?s training course.
