Marshfield Common Council Discusses No Firearms Sign at City Hall

Tuesday, October 22nd, 2019 -- 8:44 AM

(WDLB) -Marshfield Aldermen will consider removing a sign at City Hall that reads "No Firearms."

The Marshfield Common Council discussed the issue last night, then tabled a decision until next month. Todd Zieglmeier of 808 East Cleveland Street brought the idea to the Council for discussion. Zieglmeier, who is a concealed carry permit holder, cannot carry at city hall without being charged with trespassing, and wants the sign removed. Alderman Steve MacSwain was dead set against removing any signage from city buildings prohibiting guns or other weapons from those facilities. Alderman Rebecca Spiros wants the signs taken down. City Attorney Harold Wolfgram said the issue at hand is not a code question, but rather a signage issue.

The issue will be on the next Council agenda for its meeting on November 12th. Also last night, Aldermen voted in Adam Fischer of 1323 East 17th Street to the Council seat vacated by Jason Zaleski. The Council voted 7-2 in favor of Fischer, over Ardell Klein of 609 South Felker Avenue. Fischer is no stranger to local government. He became a member of the Wood County Board of Supervisors in 2016, filling the unexpired term of Peter Hendler who stepped down. Fischer will take his seat on the Common Council next month.
