Businesses Should Consider a Data Security Audit

Monday, October 21st, 2019 -- 8:43 AM

(WRN) -October is Cyber Security Month and it's a reminder to make sure that your business does an audit of the data that it's storing.

Any business that works with the collection and storage of customer data needs to make sure they have policies in place to keep that data safe. State consumer protection administrator Lara Sutherlin says that whether you use on site storage or cloud storage for your data, you need to ensure that those servers are secure.

"That they have antivirus systems in place to prevent things like malware, that you have password protected them properly."

Sutherlin says that depending on the data that you're storing, there's a number of different rules and regulations that you have to follow.

"So we encourage folks to consult with your attorney if you have one or visit the FTC and find out if there's laws applicable to the data you're storing."

Sutherlin says your company and employees should be aware of what sorts of devices they're using to do their work.

"You need to understand what you have that is storing data, and that you make sure that those devices that are storing data are properly protected."

Many people are aware that their phones and tablets can store data, but other devices could have access to that data like printers, copiers and fax machines. You can find out more online at D A T CP dot W I dot Gov.
