Senator Baldwin Looks to Create Commission to Overhaul Nation's Criminal Codes

Thursday, October 17th, 2019 -- 9:40 AM

(WRN) -Senator Tammy Baldwin wants to create a federal commission to overhaul the nation's criminal codes and assess how the government is enforcing the law.

Baldwin says it's long since time for a major review of policing in the country.

"Our criminal justice system needs a top-to-bottom review to ensure we’re doing everything we can to promote public safety, reduce crime and lower recidivism rates in Wisconsin and around the country."

Baldwin says the commission that would be formed would do a top to bottom review of police procedures and criminal codes.

"This bipartisan effort is an important step in the right direction to keep our communities safe and make the criminal justice system more just and fair."

The last time one of these reviews was made was in 1965 during the Johnson Administration. That commission brought around new standardized training for police, as well as the 9-1-1 system. The commission would not only examine federal laws and departments, but also state, local and tribal criminal justice systems.
