Owen City Council Discusses America in Bloom Recognition

-The Owen City Council discussed their America in Bloom recognition at their meeting last week.Two members of the committee thanked the council for allowing them to attend the AIB Symposium in St Charles, IL. Owen was recognized on the first night for the beautiful flowers, hanging baskets and the flowers the businesses in Owen display. Saturday, the second night, Owen won the Champion Award. This has really put Owen on the map and in a good way. The Building Committee had an opportunity to tour the WE Energy Building. The Committee has been giving this building consideration as a new location for City Hall. The building has been heated all the years it sat empty, so it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. The Committee will continue to look into options. A map showing where a bathroom/storm shelter could be built by Kerry Park was also distributed. Federal Emergency Management Agency has grant money for these types of project. The city would be responsible for 12% of this project, of which some could be the value of the land.
Also, Tim Swiggum has been working with Dan Jonas, National Weather Service, to establish a National Weather Service Reporting Station at the City Garage. Finally, the council heard the CDC’s Report. Director Swiggum reported the Farm Technology Days 2022 was awarded to Roehl Farms out of Loyal. Tim will also be working with Eric Anderson, of West Central Planning, on the Zoning Map. Warehouse distributor still interested in building in our area. Autumnfest will be held October 19th to celebrate the community. There will be a chili cookoff and a pie eating contest, vendors, crafts, live music and a hayride.
