Wisconsin DNR Says President's Proposed Rewrite of Lead Contamination Rules Not Good Enough

Saturday, October 12th, 2019 -- 6:19 AM

(AP) -Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials say the current administration's proposed rewrite of lead contamination rules isn't good enough.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler announced in Green Bay on Thursday that the chances will require water systems to test lead levels at schools and child care facilities, require officials to identify areas with the worst contamination and toughen procedures for sampling tap water. Conservation groups have criticized the changes, saying they would give water utilities another 20 years to fully replace all lead pipes in a contaminated system.

Democratic Gov. Tony Evers' administration controls the DNR. The department issued a statement Friday saying pipe replacement is the best way to control contamination and the EPA proposal doesn't adequately address that route.
