Marshfield's "Dumpster Puppies" Inspire New Bill Regarding Animal Abuse

Thursday, October 10th, 2019 -- 11:46 AM

(WRN) -Following the infamous 'dumpster puppies' case that drew national attention to Marshfield last winter, state lawmakers John Spiros and Jerry Petrowski have co-authored a bill to toughen the penalty for animal abuse with the intent to kill.

Spiros says that because rescuers managed to save the puppies, the suspect got off easy.

"Because those puppies didn't die that individual did a plea bargain and the maximum he could be charged with is a misdemeanor."

Spiros says he and Petrowski want to create penalties for 'animal abuse with the intent to kill'.

"What we did is, we changed the law to say that he has the intent to kill these puppies and he could be guilty of a felony."

Robert Wild of Marshfield was accused of dumping puppies in the trash, but because the puppies survived, he was able to plead down to a pair of misdemeanor charges.
