Governor Evers Creates Task Force to Improve Data Protection

Tuesday, October 8th, 2019 -- 9:21 AM

(WRN) -Governor Tony Evers is putting together a special task force to improve data protection laws in Wisconsin.

Governor Tony Evers is putting together a special task force to improve data protection laws in Wisconsin. State consumer protection administrator Lara Sutherlin says the task force will be trying to improve laws which haven't been touched in over a decade.

"What Wisconsin is doing, what's it's not doing. What's happening in and around the county, and in and around the world, quite frankly. And looking at ways in which we may or may not be able to modernize our current regulatory framework."

Sutherlin says Wisconsin's data protection laws need to be revamped and improved to keep up with the damage that can be done by criminals.

"We see data breaches regularly now, unfortunately. It is part of the world that we live in."

Sutherlin says a survey from last year shows that it's not a matter of if Wisconsinites will have their data stolen, but when.

"There were 3800 publicly disclosed data breaches that resulted in over 4 point 1 billion compromised records."

The task force will be holding meetings with officials and the public over the next year and then present a full framework of what can be done to improve protections next year.
