B.E.S.T. Universal Screening Tool Now Available

Sunday, September 29th, 2019 -- 8:10 AM

School is back in session and more than 100 Wisconsin educators now have the latest training to identify behavioral, emotional and social traits, or b.e.s.t., and risk factors in school-aged children.

Eric Hartwig, Ph.D., creator of the b.e.s.t. universal screening tool worked with administrators, counselors and teachers from 24 Wisconsin school districts during a two-day, comprehensive training this summer in Marshfield. Evidence shows that behavioral health is critical to many aspects of learning and development. Early identification of behavioral health issues and accompanying intervention help students thrive both in and beyond the classroom. The online screening provides a way to measure behavioral observations and provide evidence based interventions for school personnel to implement. These interventions help students who are considered at-risk or in need of additional assistance and create healthier, more productive classrooms.

Security Health Plan of Wisconsin, Inc. offers school-based behavioral health grants to promote the behavioral health and well-being of young children in local communities. It wasn’t too long after those initial conversations that plans for a more in-depth training commenced. Many educational professionals across the state said they would want to attend. Current b.e.s.t. users knew it would be a great opportunity for more robust discussions on how to match interventions to student needs in a manner that is both meaningful and sustainable in classrooms.
