Greenwood School Board Approves Tax Levy at Annual Meeting

-The Greenwood School Board held their Annual Meeting on Monday.

The board and a small audience approved a proposed tax levy of $2,474,471 for the General Fund and a tax levy of $15,000 for the Community Service Fund 80 for the 2019-20 school year. The proposed levy translates into a projected mill rate of $10.82 per $1,000 of assessed property value. The district presented a preliminary total budget of $6,075,063 for the current school year. On October 15th the district will receive the final budget numbers from the state. In addition to the budget, audience members received updates on several different items include that district enrollment numbers are up 14 students from the end of 2018-19 and summer school attendance was up over 30%. Also, a review of the 2018-19 school year was presented and it highlighted the continued growth of the Kids Club afterschool program, the research, review and selection of a K-8 English/Language Arts program, and the intervention program at the middle/high school saw a 23% reduction in the number of D and F grades. That is a 45% reduction over the last 2 years.

For Summer improvement and maintenance projects, the elementary office relocation and security improvement project was discussed. A few final touch-ups remain and a grand opening will be scheduled. New carpet was installed in the High School library and surrounding rooms. Several safety and security projects were completed in both schools using safety grant dollars received from the State of Wisconsin. Finally, they discussed goals for this school year and they include the implementation of the K-8 English/Language Arts program, performing fidelity checks on the math programs, beginning reviews of the 9-12 English curriculum and 7-12 science curriculum, continued focus on closing achievement gaps and reducing Ds and Fs, improving communication across the district and assessing and addressing any current or future district needs. The 2020 annual meeting is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 28th of 2020.
