CLARK STILL ONLY WI COUNTY WITH OVER 1,000 DAIRY HERDS

Clark County still holds the distinction of having the most dairy herds in the state.

Overall, the Dairy State lost another 32 dairy herds during the past month. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture has announced its latest dairy herd count numbers, which indicates that the were 15,242 herds milking during the month of February.

Compared to last year at this time, about 737 herds either sold out or merged with other operations.

Meanwhile, Clark County still holds the highest number of herds in the state with 1,020. Milwaukee County ranks last in the state with only three herds, followed by Iron County with four. According to the DATCP, Wisconsin's milk cow inventory, at 1.24 million head, declined 10,000 head from January 1, 2004. Nationally, Wisconsin ranked second in the number of milk cows.
