Over Sixty New Assistant District Attorney Positions Approved

Wednesday, September 18th, 2019 -- 10:41 AM

(WRN) -Over sixty new Assistant District Attorney positions have been approved statewide as part of an effort to clear up a backlog of legal cases.

Department of Administration Secretary Joel Brennan says there are just too many delays and too many people spending time in jail awaiting trial.

"The people who perpetrated the crimes, and their need for speedy due process. It's not good for the victims, it's not good for our systems. So we have to do everything we can to make sure that resources are being spent in the right way."

Brennan says having the extra help in those offices will not only help get ahead of delays in the justice system, but also make sure that new attorneys aren't overwhelmed.

"To start attacking those things, to start getting at those things, but without punishing them, without having them to do that at the expense of everything else that's great about being here in Wisconsin."

Legislative Republicans tried to decide themselves where the DAs would go, but Governor Tony Evers removed that language from the budget with the line item veto. Counties can start hiring new DAs in October, but many may wait until the next round of law school graduates start looking for jobs.
