Governor Evers Creates Retirement Task Force

Tuesday, September 17th, 2019 -- 10:40 AM

(WRN) -Governor Tony Evers is putting together a task force to help people ensure their retirement.

State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski is leading a task force to help Wisconsinites save for retirement. Godlewski says that she plans to tour the state and get input from people who are currently facing a retirement with little in the way of savings, and what can be done to help.

"Whether you're in rural wisconsin, urban Wisconsin, a small business owner, we want to understand what you're facing and why."

Godlewski will help ensure Wisconsinites have retirement security. Godlewski says that's currently a tall order, seeing how most people have less than 3-thousand dollars in their savings accounts. But, plans in other states are helping that out, like Oregon which started a public I R A fund.

"And within their first 2 years, they had over 100-thousand people join ,and they created a retirement fund of over 20-million."

Godlewski says she wants to ensure that the report the Task Force comes up with isn't just put on a shelf somewhere.

"We want to make sure that the solutions that we're coming up with are going to pass, that they're going to change Wisconsinites lives in good ways."

Godlewski says a number of states already are working on public retirement programs to supplement Social Security. While no one solution is best for everyone, she's confident the group will put together something that can work when they release their report next year. The Task Force will bring a report back to the governor and legislature next year for review.
