Republican on Education Committee Criticizes Wisconsin Schools

Monday, September 16th, 2019 -- 8:43 AM

(WRN) -The Republican head of the Assembly Education Committee says schools need to work better, and that money isn't solving that problem.

Legislative Republicans say last week's schools report showing a continued lack of reading ability in Wisconsin students shows money isn't fixing that problem. Fond Du Lac Representative Jeremy Thiesfeldt says Wisconsin's poorer students are proof of that.

"When we invest more money into education, we do not see better results. Milwaukee has been an indication of that for many years, massive amounts of money spent in Milwaukee and very little to show for it."

Thiesfeldt says schools need to drop the 'whole language' approach to reading education.

"I went to education schools and this was pushed back then in its earliest stages, and it has never really shown any sort of long term successful results."

Thiesfeldt says that accusations that these are lasting effects from the Walker administration cuts in 2011 are wrong.

"So to think that this one area of the budget can never have any kind of decrease in it is folly."

Thiesfeldt says that schools need to fix their underlying issues of how they are teaching students and go back to reliable methods of teaching reading skills. Thiesfeldt says that Republicans continues to increase funding after the cuts surrounding Act 10, and that school district need to change their methods of education to fix the problem.
