NEILLSVILLE AREA PLAYERS TURNS FIVE

Monday, March 7th, 2005 -- 2:59 PM

It?s hard to believe, but the Neillsville Area Players is turning 5-years old this year.

Monday morning, Dr. Tim Meyer and Bunny Dux were our guests on Viewpoint. They spearheaded the organization of the arts and theatre group after years of performing with a similar group in Black River Falls.

While it was a huge undertaking, Meyer and Dux said they were met with optimism from individuals, businesses and service clubs while out on their initial recruitment and fundraising drives. That optimism has continued?

"Everyday, we see people in the grocery store, we see people at work," Dux explained, "They're always telling us what a great job our last production was and asking what is coming up."

Meyer believes there are others out there who would love to take part in a production. His message to them is ?do it?.

"There's always several people that will say, 'you know, I've always wanted to get involved with this'. Those are the people we'd really like to reach out to," Meyer said.

"Not stage people always, but people backstage and makeup and hair and costuming and lights and sound. There's some many areas we could use help."

People might be surprised at some of the costs associated with putting on a large-scale production; for instance, the rights to this summer?s musical cost around $2,000.

The group has started a scholarship program for high school students who may want to pursue a major or minor in the arts.

Auditions for this summer?s production of ?The Sound of Music? will be held the 3rd and 4th of April ? stay tuned for more details.
