Farmers Start Chopping Corn in Wisconsin's Fields Last Week

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Though farmers were still hoping for some warmer weather to aid in crop development, many were able to stay busy between light rain showers getting work done in the fields last week.The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service noted on Monday's crop/weather summary that producers started chopping corn and combining small grains. The vegetable growers were also working to get their crops harvested. And manure hauling and winter wheat planting continued throughout the state. Topsoil moisture levels were rated eight percent short, 83 percent adequate and nine percent surplus. As of Sunday, all but six percent of the corn was silking and 72 percent had reached the dough stage. Nearly a third of the crop was dented, which is over two weeks behind schedule for this time of year. Scouts put the corn condition at just 67 percent good to excellent.
Corn for silage harvest was five percent chopped, nine days behind last year's progress. Eighty-five percent of the soybeans were setting pods. That's over three weeks behind normal. Leaves were coloring on 13 percent of the beans. The winter wheat harvest was nearly compete for the year, with planting reported at eight percent done. In the oat fields, 78 percent of that crop is now harvested. And hay growers are now finished with 88 percent of their third crop, with 30 percent of the fourth crop already off the fields.
