Thursday, September 5th, 2019 -- 10:39 AM

-The Owen City Council approved some new playground equipment at their meeting last week.

The council approved the Parks & Rec Committee to spend $1,400 on Playground Equipment for Crowely Park and they approved the Parks & Rec Committee accepting $75,000 from Owen Public Housing with up to $50,000 designated for the new Bath/Shower building. The council also approved the city clerk to attend the Presidential Election Academy Nov. 20th-22nd in Green Bay. The council also approved the Downtown Revitalization Committee to purchase an electric trackless train for $22,000. The monies will come from an AARP grant and donated money along with utilizing grant money set aside for Growin’ Owen. The DRC will be soliciting other donations in an attempt not to use those funds unless needed. Finally, the council approved Travis and Nicole Rogers to attend the AIB Symposium in St Charles, IL October 3rd-5th, at the cost of $345 per person, plus three nights hotel stay, mileage not included. This money will be paid out through the grant monies.

The council also heard the Community Development Authority’s Report. Director Tim Swiggum reported the Car Show and Street Dance was well attended. There were 51 cars exhibited. Heartland held their Open House on August 15th. That was also well attended. The Garbage Contract needs to be decided on at the next meeting, with the question of do we stay with unlimited garbage that we have now or go with containers provided? Also, the House of Friends met and the start date for the after-school program is Sept 9th. Mayor Milliren, Tim and the landowner attended the Farm Technology Days meeting last week. Two sites were mentioned with the proposals being due on Sept 9th. On Sept 14th, Pippins Pub and Grub will be hosting a street dance.
