Paralyzed Democratic Lawmaker Says He's Not Allowed to Phone Into Committee Meetings

Tuesday, July 30th, 2019 -- 9:41 AM

(WRN) -A member of the state Assembly who is paralyzed says he's not allowed to phone into committee meetings.

Representative Jimmy Anderson is a Dane County Democrat who uses a wheelchair. He told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that an Assembly rule prohibiting lawmakers from phoning into committee meetings discriminates against him. Anderson said he has difficulty attending some meetings in person due health reasons.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos told the Journal Sentinel that he thinks "it's disrespectful" to phone into meetings when others take the time to testify in person. Anderson called that argument "absolutely ridiculous."
