Thorp Middle and Elementary Principal Put on Administrative Leave After OWI Arrest

Wednesday, July 24th, 2019 -- 11:34 AM

-The Thorp School Board approved putting Middle and Elementary Principal Craig Michaelis on administrative leave after he was arrested for hitting a light pole in Marshfield, leaving behind his license plate and a trail of fluids.

According to the Marshfield Police Department, around 1am on July 11th, a light pole had partially blocked east traffic on McMillian Street in Marshfield. They determined a vehicle had left the road and struck the divider and light pole. A license plate was left at the scene of the crash and there were fluids that led to the garage of Michaelis. He was arrested for OWI and hit and run of property. The damage total was estimated at $12,000.

Thorp's Superintendent said Michaelis will be on paid administrative leave pending the results of an investigation. The board will not take further action until a conclusion is reached in the investigation. The Thorp School District has dealt with a similar incident. An assistant coach was charged with a felony hit and run and drunk driving as well. His contract was not renewed.
