Total Milk Output in Wisconsin Fell Last Month

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Total milk output in America's Dairyland fell slightly during the month of June when compared to the same time last year.According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, production totaled 2.57 billion pounds during the month, down one percent from June 2018, and less than May's 2.64 billion pounds, which had more days on the calendar. Nationally, 17.3 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 24 major dairy states for the month, which now includes Georgia. That was a fractional 0.1 percent higher than 2018, but less than the previous month's 18.1 billion. California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.34 billion pounds. Colorado had the greatest increase in year-to-year output as that state produced 405 million pounds of milk in June, up 6.0 percent from the same period last year. However, 12 of the top 24 states had lower year-to-year production last month.
Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major states was 8.78 million head, 62,000 head less than June 2018, and 12,000 head less than May 2019. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.27 million head, which was down 1,000 head from last month and 6,000 less than last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,030 pounds, which was the same as last year's figures.
