Republican State Senators Ask Transportation Secretary to Follow Intent of Legislature with Budget Funds

Friday, July 19th, 2019 -- 8:50 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -A group of 10 Republican state senators are asking Wisconsin Transportation Secretary Craig Thompson to follow the intent of the legislature when deciding how to utilize the $75 million his agency was allocated in the recently passed state budget.

In a letter to Thompson on Wednesday, the lawmakers expressed disappointment in Gov. Evers' partial veto decision to cut $15 million from the original $90 million that was included in the budget for road and highway improvements. The senators further noted that the budget was written so that the infrastructure improvements would be directed through the Local Road Improvement Program with a 90-10 match to help local municipalities attain the revenues needed to fix their own local roadways.

The memo was signed by Senators Howard Marklein, Alberta Darling, Devin LeMahieu, Tom Tiffany, Luther Olsen, Dan Feyen, Duey Stroebel, Van Wanggaard, Kathy Bernier, and Jerry Petrowski.
